[...] The blogger “Being Sven” has written an update to his piece on the recent crackdown on Premier League highlights online. “This isn’t just about 60-second internet highlights. This is about OUR game and the way it’s being treated. We should demand concessions. We should demand more value for our hard-earned money which we see fit to spend on the sport we love. We should refuse to continue to play the silent victim.” [...]

Your enthusiasm IS magnificent, but like most folks outside the borders of the wonderful US of A, your familiarity with capitalism is fleeting. Sports are big business, get used to it being treated that way.

The league has you (us) by the balls. Writing letters will mean nothing. They only understand money. Only money. Outrage and frustration is meaningless to any big corporation - if it doesn't threaten the bottom line. The fact that you care enough to write this blog means they HAVE you (and me as well for reading this). We are the addict and if they raise the price of our beloved heroin or limit its availability that will hardly change our "interest" in the product.

The league has (I assume) a deal in place to give exclusive rights to those highlights to broadcasters for a set amount of time - then they show up on the free web. That is why they hammmer away at YopuToogle to pull the clips down - the broadcast partners want you to watch the wrap up show (and the commercials therein) - not click away at your computer.

The league is NOT being small minded, they are protecting the massive dollar (pound? euro?) deal that is in place with their business partner, the broadcaster. Comedy Central can do what they want with their clips since they own them - the FA cannot since they share them. The MLS can do what they want with their clips - no one wants them.

Why won't the league change their ways? You said it yourself "Switching leagues and clubs is not an option." Since it is not an option, they can do whatever they want. If a girlfriend knows you won't kick her out for flirting with other guys and if she is sure you will crumble and come cooing back if she strays - why not push YOUR limits for HER gain?

It would take you (and many others) years of not buying tickets/jerseys and massively decling TV ratings for the league to believe they have a problem. The B/E PL grows in attention and TV rights fees every year - so they want to keep the train on the tracks, NOT mess with things.

It might be YOUR game. It might belong to the fans - but the only way for you to enact the kinds of changes you are talking about is to hit them where it hurts. And chances are that would hurt you more than it would them. Welcome to the Matrix - you can thank us later.

Put them up whereever, but #1, they should be free (I
would agree that extended highlights are a bird of another feather - I'll settle for the goals and hyper-crucial moments) and, #2, they should be embedable.

Switching leagues and clubs is not an option. But, I read that article and it was nice to see some sort of progress being made.

If you're going to switch leagues you should switch to the Bundesliga, they actually listen to their fans there: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=449154&root=europe&cc=5901

I wouldn't actually abandon Liverpool, though. The people you should be writing to are Gillet and Hicks; this is the kind of typically English, small minded, shit attitude that they are looking to change in Liverpool, and by extension all of England.
