Monday Brunch

A quiet weekend saw Liverpool’s Hong Kong tour come to an end, but there were Reds in action half-way across the globe.

A Liverpool XI, consisting mostly of youngsters who didn’t make the trip to Asia, took on Championship side Colchester on Saturday. The young ‘ins, managed by Gary Albett, managed a 1-1 draw through a Miki Roque goal.

The line-up was full of familar names, some of whom featured in Switzerland: Hansen, Roque, Darby, Hobbs, Huth, Spearing, El Zhar (Nemeth 77), Flynn, Brouwer (Lindfield 66), Idrizaj, Putterill (Crowther 73).

You can read about it here. I mean, if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Under-18’s were also in action, with some of the Rafa’s latest additions (Marvin Pouri, David Amoo, and Daniel Pachecho) finding the net in a 4-1 win over Plymouth Argyle. Read a short, and I mean short, article about it here.

With the season approaching, everybody is sounding off about the upcoming title race and Liverpool players are no different. Carra is the latest to put his two cents in:

United may be the champions but Chelsea are really the ones you have to use as your yardstick. Having Petr Cech back and John Terry in front of him is going to give Chelsea a real chance again. The team which finishes above Chelsea will win it this season.

United are a great side and have strengthened again. Carlos Tevez would make a big difference to their chances. Hopefully, they won’t get him!

He also had this to say about the pre-season (to

Everything is going great. We’ve had a lot of time away, obviously, but this has given everyone a chance to mix with the new lads. We’re sitting down at meal-times together and taking part in double training sessions so we’ve got to know them all a lot better than we would have done if we’d stayed back home.

They’re all good lads and great players. I’m sure they’ll have a big part to play next season. There’s always a feeling at this club that we can do something special and over the last few years we have done. Not many clubs have enjoyed the success we have recently and long may that continue.

Of course, the Premiership is the one trophy that’s continued to elude us. Hopefully that will change this season but as long as we keep winning trophies, I’ll be happy.

Rick Parry has weighed in on Liverpool’s summer and hints the spending spree may not be over:

A lot of clubs have spent significant amounts of money this summer, like Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea. Then there are a number of other clubs who have recently also had new investors, such as Newcastle, and there’s still a long way to go before the end of the transfer window.

If a player becomes available and he’s the right player for this club then yes, we will be interested.

There’s always a lot expectation but there’s definitely a special buzz about the upcoming season. We’re all excited with the new signings we’ve made and genuinely happy with what we’ve done.

As for the rest of the pre-season, there are two more meaningless matches; Friday, August 3rd vs. Shanghai Shenhua (12:30pm EST) and Sunday, August 5th vs. Feyenoord (2pm EST).

In ‘Former Reds’ news, rumor has it (I suppose I’ll never be able to truly quit you, rumors) that new Newcastle owner and Howard Hughes wannabe, Mike Ashley, wants Kevin Keegan to return to the club in the role of Director of Football.

I’m not sure how much quitting Kev will get to do in this new job (he’s one of the best at it), but I tell you honestly, Newcastle fans will love it if they get him. LOVE IT!

Anyhow, August is almost here and that means one thing….

And because the new campaign is almost upon us, next week is Preview Week here at Being Sven. And, yes, it’ll be exactly what it sounds like — a week previewing the 07/08 Barclays Premier League season.

So you’ve got that going for you, which is nice.

13 days and counting…
